Hybrid Cloud Solution Unveiled By StratoGen

Where Next? Cloud Hosting In 2011

The future of cloud computing is Hybrid clouds.  The benefits of cloud computing both within (private cloud) and outside (public cloud) of the organisation are now commonly understood – flexible, scalable agile IT infrastructure.   But it is unlikely that we will see a wholesale shift to public cloud providers.  Organisations will want to keep some workloads internal, due to concerns over security, network access, vendor lock in etc.  At the same time these organisations will want to benefit where they can from the economies of scale offered by public cloud providers, perhaps for certain types of workloads, or to satisfy peaks in resource requirements.

In order for organisations to realise such benefits, it needs to be as easy as possible for them to manage their workloads regardless of which cloud they reside in.  Being able to move running  virtual machines from in-house to a cloud provider in a single click will revolutionise the way we think about cloud capacity.

VMware is leading the hybrid cloud push, devoting their entire development effort to bridging public & private clouds. Dominant in the private cloud space, organisations running VMware will undoubtedly seek public cloud providers running the same technology.  Partly from a trust perspective – it’s always more comfortable to stick with what you know, and partly from an ease of use perspective. This is causing cloud providers to rethink their virtualisation strategies, with many planning to move away from ‘lowest cost’ options such as Xen to enterprise class, feature rich platforms from the major vendors such as VMware.

VMware’s development is starting to pay off with the recent announcement of  vCloud director. A software product that promises to make it easy for organisations to move or ‘federate’ workloads from the private to the public cloud and back, and manage both environments from a single pane of glass.

2011 will be an exciting year. We have reached the tipping point where the majority of organisations are comfortable with the cloud, and are willing to host even their mission critical servers in it. With the current push to hybrid clouds we will see further market adoption of the cloud model which looks set to dominate for many years to come.
