600 companies were asked whether they are considering adopting the new cloud hosting technology that has been the buzzword of the online IT industry for the last year, and out of those who participated 36% of the responses were positive.
The survey found that the lower cost of hosting in the cloud is the most likely reason for companies to consider migrating, followed closely by scalability and the increased processing power it has to offer.
Another interesting revelation in the survey showed that 57% of the companies asked simply don’t understand the concept of hosting in the cloud and the benefits that it provides.
Understandably, there are concerns over hosting sensitive data in the cloud due to the lack of physical boundaries between external parties and less control than is readily available when hosting traditionally. Further concerns are due to the untested nature of the service (indeed cloud hosting companies are only at Beta stage) and include worries about the reliability of the infrastructure.
In summary the wider majority of the marketplace still need convincing either through education of through positive case studies from the “guinea pigs”. The guinea pigs could be set for a major win over their competitors with huge costs savings and increased performance to boot but on the flip side may be subject to downtime and infrastructural problems out of their control.
One thing is for sure, if the service gains a proven track record, there will be a huge market for cloud hosting providers as the transition from traditional hosting to the cloud will start to take shape due to the undeniable advantages it has to offer.
