An exclusive interview with the Guardian has revealed Richard Stallman’s thoughts about the cloud hosting revolution and warns that those who keep their data in the cloud are running the risk of being trapped into a future of constantly increasing prices.
Richard is referring to the concept of using web-based programs such as GMail and Google Accounts. It is always dangerous to become dependent on a single provider so that you are locked in as a consumer; when you reach this stage, the ball is in the court of the provider – they can price hike and you don’t have any option but to oblige. By placing all your data in the cloud, and relying so heavily on the processing power of a third party provider, you are giving companies such as Google far too much control over your operation. And, once you are in the cloud, it is difficult to revert back.
